La géographie humaine éclaire de façon originale la plupart des interrogations et des enjeux du monde contemporain. Elle permet de mieux comprendre les inégalités devant la maladie ou la mort, la pauvreté ou la richesse, l'accès aux ressources ainsi qu'aux différents équipements et services. Les compétitions entre territoires exprimées dans le cadre de la mondialisation, au travers de délocalisations ou relocalisations d'activités économiques, les transformations rapides des systèmes urbains et des réseaux de transport sont aussi passibles d'un regard géographique. De leur côté, les domaines culturels et politiques gagnent à être envisagés sous un angle spatial ou territorial. Toutes ces questions amènent à réfléchir, à différentes échelles, aux problèmes d'aménagement des territoires. Le regard du géographe aide à alimenter une réflexion autour de grands défis : nourrir une humanité de plus en plus nombreuse, transmettre aux générations futures un environnement préservé, valoriser le local tout en vivant dans un monde globalisé traversé de nombreux conflits... Cet ouvrage, en abordant chacune des grandes thématiques de la géographie humaine, se propose d'apporter des pistes de réflexion aux interrogations actuelles du monde contemporain en s'appuyant sur les résultats les plus récents des recherches scientifiques.

The Environmentalism of the Poor has the explicit intention of helping to establish two emerging fields of study - political ecology and ecological economics - whilst also investigating the relations between them. The book analyses several manifestations of the growing 'environmental justice movement', and also of 'popular environmentalism' and the 'environmentalism of the poor', which will be seen in the coming decades as driving forces in the process to achieve an ecologically sustainable society. The author studies, in detail, many ecological distribution conflicts in history and at present, in urban and rural settings, showing how poor people often favour resource conservation. The environment is thus not so much a luxury of the rich as a necessity of the poor. It concludes with the fundamental questions: who has the right to impose a language of valuation and who has the power to simplify complexity? Joan Martinez-Alier combines the study of ecological conflicts and the study of environmental valuation in a totally original approach that will appeal to a wide cross-section of academics, ecologists and environmentalists.
